Tomorrow it's on.

Gata Kamsky vs. Vespin Topalov. (misspelled no doubt)

The winner to take on Anand sometime later this year for the 2009 Chess Championship.

The cool thing is, Gata is American. Raised in Russia, learned his game there, but moved here for all the normal reasons.

Topalov is Bulgarian. They are playing 8 games in Bulgaria, starting tomorrow (Feb 16th) running until, I think, the 23rd.

Topalov is a former world champ. Gata took a number of years off and is where he is now as a result of his unretirement a year or two or so ago. I believe Gata made it to the #2 slot once before and then lost to one of the big names from last generation, precipitaing his retirement.

Anyhow-I know-Groans from the gallery- yada yada yada.

If Gata wins and then beats Anand, he will be only the second American World Champ ever, the other one being, of course, Bobby Fischer. That's gotta be interesting, right?

Ya know on The X-Files the chess prodigy kid turned out to be part alien. We should probably shoot the winner before colonization begins. ;)

Dirty Commies. What we need is for this former Russian to teach a few Americans the game so that we can be a world chess power. Because it's just embarrassing for us not to be the best at everything, especially when it's something concerning superior brain function.

Oh come on John, just let us make chess a little interesting! What's the fun of chess if you can't beat the commies?

i did see this thing on tv the other day where boxers would pound each other for 5-8 rounds and have a timed chess game either between rounds or right after the match.

I've heard of that too Moose

HAHA! That's funny! I would like to watch something like that! I wonder if their ability to play lessens after a few rounds. What they should do is make them play against morons they would normally beat, and see how their performance is affected by the boxing match.

It's a sport that brings together opposites. Mobsters and MIT grads. Interesting!
