What I liked about Indiana Jones #3 was that it ended with us thinking that him and his father would live forever since they drank from the cup of Christ, or whatever it was called. What a cool way to end a trilogy!

Then they go and ruin it by making #4, where his father is dead and he's OLD.

Kurt Cobain had it right. Kill yourself in your prime.

yeah! good point about the chailce from the palace. (or was it the flagon with the dragon?)

I liked Indiana Jones 4. As much as you might not like to admit it, the new Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies are not so much different than the old ones. Part of the problem is that you are 34 and not 8 years old. You recognize the "bad movie physics," and you are letting that kind of stuff ruin it for you. Be honest with yourself, would you like the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies if they came out new today? True, the gungans were annoying, so were a couple of other things. I didn't enjoy the new Star Wars movies as much as the old ones. But on the whole, I thought they were fun, same with Indiana Jones.

EEEEEERK! WRONG!

Renae said...

Denial. Tell me what was so great about the old movies that isn't there in the new.

Eyepoke said...

1) Chemistry.
2) Plot.

i think renae has a lot of good points. i liked all 3 of the new star wars movies. there were some thing that got on my nervs(like the gungins in general and some of the one liner stuff(cp30"im beside my self")) but on the whole i liked them, and i had a good time at the new indy movie. i was not the basic holliwood dribble that has been comming out for years. it was just a adventurous fun time. and brad as i remember indy and his dad where told they would have to live in that goofy temple thing in order to live forever.

Bruce said...

but you are right about one thing, george lucas does look like a gungan to me. i think its the turky neck thing.

Brad Carter said...

I don't hate these movies just because I'm old. I actually liked Star Wars Episode 1, aside from the Gungans. Well, aside from just that one really annoying Gungan. I thought Episode 1 was an okay movie.

Now, Star Wars 2 and 3...those were complete crap. George has cheapened the entire trilogy by making them a part of it. Same with the Indiana Jones trilogy - it now ends with a movie that shouldn't have been made.

My kids had never seen any of the Indiana Jones movies, but since #4 was coming out, we watched the other 3. The kids liked them all, but they did say that #4 was their least favorite.

What really sucks is that there are probably going to be even more Indiana Jones movies now, with his son playing the lead. Just let an awesome thing rest in peace already!

i think last crusade was my least fav of the indy movies. i do think that as some point you need to let a good thing alone. and an indy movie is not an indy movie with out harrison ford.

Renae you are utterly delusional if you think Lucas's new movies even remotely measure up to his old work. Pleeeeese! I actually got bored during indy 4.

I think Renae has a point.

Movies I saw as a kid that I think I would not enjoy as much seeing them for the first time now as an adult:

Red Sonja (loved this movie as a kid, but it consistently gets on "worst movies" lists so it makes me wonder)

Tron (sure the graphics were cool then, but what about the plot?)

The Never Ending Story (just say my name Sebastian! and other various cheesy lines)

Goonies (ok, still a classic, but a little wobbly in places upon scrutiny, thanks Brad!)

The Lost Boys (scary, but over the top acting)

I'm sure there are a million others just like them.

temp is right(she agrees with renae, usually a good choice), i loved clash of the titens when i was a kid but im not sure i could get through it now. i think in some cases(im talking about movies not people) we have forgotten how to have fun watching a movie and get too wrapped up annalizing. i enjoyed the last harry poter movie way more because i went in knowing that it was not going to be just like the book. other times i sat there going "thats not how it happened in the book" a lot of this is hollywoods fault. they have been trying to make every thing so realistic looking that we for get we are suposed to be getting entertained. just watch almost any movie from the 80's and you will see what im talking about. the way they acted was diferent. it was all over the top.

I'm not saying that the new Indiana Jones / Star Wars movies are masterpeices, or that the old ones are crap. As with a lot of things, you should just let a great thing lie. Sequels are typically not as good as the originals. But part of the let down is, I believe, because 1) You remember these movies as the ultimate movie experience, and nothing, no matter how great, can ever measure up to that. (A good reason not to try.) 2) We, the generation that grew up idolizing Indy and Luke, are now adults. As I said, our perspectives have changed. While I think that I would still enjoy SW and IJ if they were new now, I don't think I would like them nearly as much as I did as an eight year old. I think what Bruce said is true, you just have to sit back and let yourself be entertained, rather than pick it apart. I had a good time with IJ4. It might not have been as wonderful as the originals, but still a fun movie.

Renae said...

And oh my gosh! How did we ever stand 80s movies in general?!! Such horkiness! Maybe that's what made SW and IJ so good - a break from utter barfness. -ha ha!

Bruce said...

clearly ij1 and sw e4 where the crowning jewls of the collections. i dont think any one is argueing that. i kind of wish the matrix movies would have ended with the first one.

Eyepoke said...

You are all so wrong. Star wars was big in its day cause it was great! Remember- It wasn't 8 year olds buying the tickets back in the day. I would have been fully capable of loving the new star wars movies as much as the old ones- if they hadn't sucked! When I very occasionally watch the original SW or IJ i dont get all nostalgic- Im like- wow this movie rocks. They are Good Movies!

Lucas has lost his touch.

When a better series than star wars came along in the form of LoR, I was fully capable of accepting the new King of all Movies. You guys are so dum!

Eyepoke said...

DUM

Eyepoke said...

and I hate you.

Of all the movies timpani named, I have only seen the lost boys. I never was into the 80's.

Brad Carter said...

Aw man, The Matrix was so amazing. I loved that movie and couldn't wait for the 2nd one to come out. Then I was blown away by how much the 2nd one sucked. It was just awful. Thanks for bringing up that horrible memory, Bruce.

Eyepoke said...

I liked all 3 matrixes.

Brad Carter said...

Well you liked Rick Astley too, so you don't count.

Bruce said...

john, what your forgetting is that the adults of the 70's, the ones that liked SW, also liked disco. im not sure if he has lost his touch, got too full of himself, or just got distracted by new technology. the new SW movies had the task of going back and telling the begining of a greatly known and loved story. very hard to pull off. not done perfectly, but not horibly eighter. i liked the new IJ movie and seeing how it spent 2 weeks so far at the top of the box office means that at least some one(a few millon some ones) agrees with me.

Bruce said...

and sory brad, the 2nd and especcaly the 3rd matrix movies are hard for me to remimber too. the first one was so mind blowing, and the rest...ehh.

Eyepoke said...

World's dumbest point ever Bruce. Of course people are going to see IJ. They are thinking, like I did, that it might be as good as the other 3. I went to see it, and I never see stuff in the theater.

You are all suffering from an attack of nostalgia that keeps you from facing the fact that these new movies clearly are gay.

Its like the same sort of delusion you sometimes see in religious people when they cling to obviously retarded dogma out of nothing but habit and emotion. You are clinging dogmatically to an obviously retarded movie for no reason other than you loved the SW and IJ movies when you were a kid. You are drinking the KOOL-aid maaaaan!

Eyepoke said...

Oh BTW Gary Gyjax died 3 months ago, I just found out. Moment of silence please.

Bruce said...

the point moron is that is was tops 2 weeks not 1. if had just been 1 week you would be right. if every one thought it sucked they would have said "don't wast your money, wait for it to come out on DVD." but apperently that was not the tail the first week vewers where telling. i didnt think the 3rd ij movie was up to par. it was good, but not as good as 2 and definently not as good as 1. i didnt say 4 was the greatest thing since sliced bread, i just said it was a pretty good movie, and i liked it. at least im not resorting to propiganda to get my point across. i mean come on pick the worst caracter, the one every body said got on their nervs, and put that picture up. your practicly a notzi. and as a side note, are you saying spealberg has lost his touch too? he directed IJ4.

Bruce said...

i hate not being able to spell. i find it embarrising.

Brad Carter said...

Don't forget, IJ4 doesn't have much competition at the box office right now so it's not hard for it to remain in the #1 spot. Sex and the City is beating it right now which is only helping to confirm the suckiness of both movies.

timpani76 said...

In my defense, we did not see IJ4 yet. We saw Prince Caspian instead (which I thought was better than the first C of N movie).

Geez people! Let's start a war or something. Reminds me of Ashley after we watched Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat at the Muny. I said I thought the narrator did a bad job. Ashley, who was about 8 at the time, hysterically screamed at the top of her lungs "I LIIIIIIKKKKKKEEEEDDD HEEERR!" I can't do it justice here, but it's a classic Ashley moment. Anyway, yes, I agree that the new movies CLEARLY aren't up to the old standard. However, I found it still fun to watch. Okay, now shut up you goon face!

Renae said...

I'm totally jamming out with your "One Night in Bangkok." It makes me remember the time I impressed the pants off of you with my fake knowledge of the lyrics. I had such a fun time pulling that one on you!

Eyepoke said...

I will say that this argument has possibly been the high point for nerdy discussion ever here on the JSFC, so its been fun for me that way.

Bruce said...

i think that is the only reason im still talking about it. its not like i care if anny body likes or dislikes that same movies i do. or books, tv shows, etc... even though im clearly right, and you suck!

Red Sonja! Man I haven't even thought about that movie in years and years!!! I do remember it though. Wasn't she Conan's girlfriend or something?

Conan now that's a movie that's overdue for a sequel! ;)
